2018 Top 100

Many people say the top 100 are too popular for them. When you think about it, how many of the top 100 names do you know on babies or someone older? I can say that I have not personally met many people with the top 100 names and if I have they are few and far between. So I say give the top 100 a chance!

Each year I take a look at the top 100 to see what names have entered and what names have left. This year I am also going to be looking at some of the biggest risers in the top 100.

To my surprise only 3 boy names entered the top 100 this year. Normally there are at least 5 names. Looking at the other all top 1000 not a whole ton of names entered or moved. Everett is was in my 5 name predictions for new names to the top 100 and Axel with in the honorable mentions. Miles should have been in the top 100 a few years ago so its nice to see it there now. Many parents out there like the -ett ending names and Everett fits the bill.

The girls had more names enter the top 100 than the boys. Sophie fits just right in the top 100 along side her sister names Sophia and Sofia. Last year E girl names were heavy so I am not surprised Emery made the top 100. The name is also similar to other Em- names in the top 100 like Emma, Emily, and Emilia. Last year and this year I predictions that Josephine, Ivy, and Isla would make the top 100 names and this year they did in fact make it. Josephine is a classic name and is Ivy but Ivy has a little bit more of a modern feel to it. Isla is exotic without being exotic.

Because names entered the top 100 some names had to fall off down the list. Here are the names that dropped.

Chase  #94 --> #112
Gavin #96 --> #111
Ayden #99 --> #109

Mackenzie #100 --> #106
Reagan #98 --> #107
Clara #96 --> #103
Isabelle #92 --> #113
Melanie #09 --> #105
Peyton #89 --> #101
Aubree #86 --> #110

The boy names that left the top 100 do not surprise me. It seems we are having the fall of the Aidens. The numbers are showing a slow decline overall. As fort he girls I am surprised some of the names have fallen off the list. Isabelle had just made it onto the top 100 last year and is now off the list. Clara seems like a classic and a fit fort he top 100. As for the others I can see the decline in the names. We are currently in a  shift of style as the parents naming their babies are slowly coming from a younger generation.

This year I also want to take a look at the biggest raisers in the top 100. Some of the names are on the list are names that have been in the top 100 while a few have just entered but made a big leap.

1. Isaac (#34) +34 spots
2. Theodore (#44) +18 spots
3. Carson (#70) +13 spots
4. Asher (#47), Maverick (#73), Santiago (#81), Miles (#98) +12 spots each
5. Leo (#50), Elias (#67)  +11 spots each

1. Nova (#56) +39 spots
2. Everly (#53) +29 spots
3. Emery (#92) +23 spots
4. Ivy (#86) +22 spots
5. Isla (#82) +21 spots

2018 SSA List!

It's the best day in the naming world. The new SSA most popular name list is out! Sadly I worked a 12 hours shift so I am just now getting the chance to sit down and really look over the name list at near 1030 at night. Granted I did some sister-cousin bounding time right after work but still! I will still be posting my normal yearly posts they will just be a little late this year. But keep your eyes peeled for them this weekend!

Let's spend this time looking at the top 10 names for 2018!

1. Liam
2. Noah
3. William
4. James
5. Oliver +4
6. Benjamin
7. Elijah +1
8. Lucas +3
9. Mason -2
10. Logan -5

1. Emma
2. Olivia
3. Ava
4. Isabella
5. Sophia
6. Charlotte +1
7. Mia -1
8. Amelia
9. Harper +2
10. Evelyn -1

Compared to last years list there were very few changes to the top 10. Only one name was added for each gender. Lucas replaced Jacob in the top 10 and Harper replaced Abigail. Jacob had been in the top 10 since 1993 and was even #1 for 13 years in the 2000s. Lucas is sitting in the top 10 group for the first time but has been making his steady climb up since 1960s. In 1993 the name popped back into the top 100.

Abigail entered the top 10 in 2001 and only ever made it as high as #4 for a single year before it floated around close to the bottom of the top 10 list. Harper on the other hand has been making a huge leap towards the top. The name didn't enter the top 1000 until 2004 and made it into the top 100 by 2011. Harper is a repeat offender in the top 10 landing in the #10 spot in 2015 and staying there for 2016 before dropping out again.

Overall I'm happy with the last but a little shocked we didn't have more movement. I mean the top 5 girl names have not changed! Speaking of the unchanged #1 names here are some fun facts about them.

Liam
  • Has only been #1 for 2 years
  • The name entered the top 10 in 2012
  • The name didn't enter the top 1000 until 1967and has made a semi steady climb up the charts

Emma:
  • Has been #1 for 5 straight years now and was also #1 in 2008
  • It first entered the top 10 in 2002 jumping from #13 to #4. Thats 9 whole spots!
  • The name as been around since the start of the top 1000 lists and was in the top 20 for 20 years in the 1900s

So what are your thoughts? Anything you'd like to see?

2018 SSA List Predictions {Top 1000}

Last week I wrote a post on my predications for names entering the top 100 in 2018 when the new list comes out on Friday. Today I am going to make some predications to new names to the top 1000. Every year many names enter the top 1000 either for the first time or as a comeback. A lot of the names on this list are names I wold love to see make it onto the top 1000.

Forest- Given to 200 baby boys in 2017
Forest sits just outside the top 1000 at #1006. Word names and nature names are all the rage. I think Forest is the perfect name to come back into the top 1000. This name would be a comeback kid being as it was just in the top 1000 in 1995 and in the 1910s and 1920s was in the top 300. Forest is a vintage name of sorts.

Bear- Given to 196 baby boys in 2017
Last year I had Bear on my predication list and it did not make it into the top 1000. Bear has never been in the top 1000 and would be a welcomed addition. Like Forest, Bear is a word name. I hear a lot of word names around, especially in 2018. In March of 2017 Liam Payne named his son Bear. It was later in the year so I could see the name influencing the numbers in 2018.

Archie- Given to 156 baby boys in 2017
Archie was another name on my predictions list last year and I am adding it to this year's list. There are 2 reasons why I think Archie will jump into he top 1000. 1. Riverdale has been a popular show in the past few years and the main character's name is Archie. 2. Archie is more popular in England and has been for a few years. America always takes naming cues from England.

Adler- Given to 194 baby boys in 2017
Adler has this appeal to it that I just cannot but my finger on it. The name sounds fresh to the ears. It's a surname name, a perfect name for today's trends. From 2016 to 2017 a few more baby boys were given the name, from 170 babies to 194 babies.

Gus- Given to 178 baby boys in 2017
Old man chic names are due to come back, especially the names that were popular in the 1920s. In the 1920s Gus ranked in the top 300 and would make a nice addition to the top 1000. A new trend I have seen happening recently is nicknameless names, names that do not have nicknames. Gus is perfect for that trend.

Honorable Mentions: Stone, Ramsey, Murphy, and Finnian

Elodie- Given to 251 baby girls in 2017
Last year I had Elodie on my prediction list and the name didn't make it. I am adding it to my list again this year because I am SURE it will make it into the top 1000. So many people love the name. It fits in with the other El- names like Eleanor and Elizabeth. Its magical and princess like.

Winnie- Given to 257 baby girls in 2017
Winnie sits just outside the top 1000 at #1002. The name has a lot of vintage charm and is a pretty nickname. The current generation is digging nicknames more than naming a child with a name that offers the option of a nickname. Maybe parents who already have daughters named Millie and Sadie and Belle will name their 2018 baby Winnie?

Bellamy- Given to 247 baby girls in 2017
Bellamy is the perfect alternative to the Belle names out there that some parents might want to use but is too popular for their taste. It is an up and coming name. A surname that sounds more popular than it really is. If the name doesn't hit the top 1000 this year it for sure will hit it next year.

Flora- Given to 222 baby girls in 2017
Flora was once in the top 1000 ranking just outside the top 100 in the 1910s and staying in the top 1000 until the 1970s when the name fell off the charts. This vintage beauty is really for a comeback. Ora names are attractive to parents now with their elegant feel.

Haisley- Given to 227 baby girls in 2017
I debuting adding Haisley to my predictions list. I ultimately added it because it seems like the trend name that parents could like. A little bit of Hayley and a little bit of Maisie and an alternative to Paisley make this name appealing. Will it jump into the top 1000?

Honorable Mentions: Waverly, Lilia, Beatrix, and Arden

I am very excited for the list to come out on Friday. Sadly I will be working a 12 hours shift but you better believe I will be rushing home to spend hours looking at the list. Every year I am most excited for the new names to the top 1000. What are your predications?
