2021 Top 100

The top 100 list is a hodge podge of names. You have the classic, timeless names mixed in with the modern coming of age names. I like to think there is a name on the top 100 for everyone. I know there are some people that would say any name in the top 100 is off limits. But I like to counteract that with asking this one question: "How many babies or kids do you know with the name Silas or Ruby?" Both those names are currently ranked under the top 50 but still in the top 100. Personally I don't know any kids in real life with those names. I can guarantee that there are plenty of names in the top 100 that you haven't heard on a baby or younger child in real life. And every year the names move just a little. A name that is in the top 100 this year might fall out next year and vice versa.

This year we had 6 new names jump into the top 100, 4 boys and 2 girls. I have to say I'm surprised that there aren't move changes to the girl names. Relatively speaking there are more girl names and variants out there than there are boy names. But it looks like we are getting a little bit of a change with the boys this year.

I am not surprised at the boy names that have entered the top 100. In fact I had predicted that Beau, Bennett, and Waylon would enter the top 100. I am getting a very western vibe from these new boy names.

As for the girl names I am very surprised that Athena and Rylee are in the top 100. They have been hovering just outside the list in recent years. Rylee was actually #100 a few years back. I thought for sure she would inch down just a little this year. I do have to say I had no idea what names would even be entering the top 100 this year for girls. Most of the names just didn't feel like they would make it in.

Because we gained 6 new names to the list that means 6 names fell down the charts.

Jaxson #85 --> #101
Jace #96 --> #102
Adam #97 --> #104
Kayden #99 --> #108

Samantha #90 --> 105
Brielle #100 --> #118

I am going to keep up with my fun name data analysis from years past and include the top 5 names that had the biggest increases and biggest decreases within the top 100 for both genders. I won't be including names that entered the top 100 this year.

1. Luca (#42), Brooks (#77) +25
2. Kai (#71) +22
3. Wesley (#84) +14
4. Theodore (#10) +13
5. Jack (#11) +10

1. Leilani (#67) +25
2.  Autumn (#66) +16
3.  Ruby (#62), Alice (#64) +12
4. Isla (#33), Delilah (#58) +11
5. Caroline (#81) +10

Biggest Decreases Within the Top 100
1. Connor (#97) -19
2. Hunter (#86) -18
3. Carson (#98) -14
4. Dominic (#99) -11
5. Jeremiah (#85) -10

1. Anna (#84) -16
2. Josephine (#72), Serenity (#85) -15
3. Genesis (#75) -13
4. Skylar (#74) -11
5. Victoria (#43), Aubrey (#65), Bella, (#73), Ariana (#88) -9

How do you feel about the top 100? What are your favorites?

2019 SSA Top 100

The top 100 list is always a line for people it is either too popular and just right. Personally I can't decide. Years ago I would have said that the list was too popular and never pick a name in the top 100 but now I say otherwise. Some of my favorite names are in the top 100. Of those names I have never or rarely hear kids with the names. That is something to take into consideration: How many babies do you know with the names in the top 100?

To my surprise there were only 4 new to the top 100 names for each gender. Last year there were almost double that for girls. I feel like there wasn't as much moving and grooving overall to the list this year.

All of the boy names that entered the top 100 do not surprise me. I have been waiting for Kai to enter the top 100 for a few years now. Its one of the names I always see around the naming community. Luca is a name that I can see the appeal of. It ends in an A and is very similar to the much more popular name Lucas.

I am split on the new girl names to the top 100. I wouldn't have expected Peyton to enter the top 100. This name has been in the top 100 before and even ranked in the top 50 in the early 2010s. For that reason I would expect it to go down. Rylee has been hovering just outside the top 100 for a few years now. Parents see the appeal of the name for the unique yet girly spelling. It honestly surprises me that Arya is just now entering the top 100 even after all the years of the super popular Game of Thrones series.

Because 8 new names entered the top 100 8 names had to leave the top 100. Here are the names that dropped off. The 2018 rank is first and the new 2019 rank is second.

Jason #100 --> #104
Sawyer #99 --> #106
Bryson #93 --> #102
Brayden #84 --> #101

Brielle #99 --> #101
Kaylee #97 --> #114
Arianna #95 --> #116
Alexa #90 --> #139

I am not surprised at the names that dropped off the list especially for Alexa. I think the name is going to keep dropping off the list due to the popular virtual assistant. I think the Brayden names are becoming less and less popular and the numbers show that for sure. When it comes to Sawyer I think the name will jump in and out of the top 100.

Last year I did something new and I want to do it again this year. I am going to take a look at the names that had the biggest moves within the top 100. These are names that were already there but had a big jump.

1. Miles (#75) +23
2. Ezekiel (#71) +16
3. Maverick (#58) +15
4. Jameson (#77) +14
5. Santiago (#69) +43

1. Isla (#57) +25
2. Eliana (#62) +21
3. Ivy (#68) +18
4. Valentina (#65), Emilia (#42) +16
5. Willow (#46) +14

2019 List Predictions {Top 100}

Predicting the new names to the top 100 is my second favorite prediction list to make during this time. It's easier to make than the top 10 but harder than the top 1000. I have less chances of getting these right than I do of the top 1000. We are just days away from the release so I am getting these in just in time.

Let's start by taking a look at my predictions from last year. I made 5 main predictions and 3 honorable mentions for each gender. I had 2/8 right for the boys and 3/8 right for the girls. I am going to add some of the names to my prediction list this year and do the same number of predictions.

Declan (#101)
From 2017 to 2018 Declan gained 14 spots and now sits one spot outside the top 100. The name has been hanging out just under the top 100 for a few years now but last year was the closest it came to being in the top 100. The soft sound and Irish vibes of this name make it easy to love. This name could go either way.

Micah (#103)
Micah was one of my predictions for last year that did not make the top 100 list. It did however rise in popularity just a little. Now it sits right outside the top 100. Micah appeals to the parents who like Noah but want something less popular. Both names are biblical and end in -ah.

Luca (#106)
Like Micah, Luca was a predictions I made for last years list that did not quite make it. From 2017 to 2018 the name jumped 24 spots. People adore A ending boy names more and more each year making me think Luca will earn his spot in the top 100 this year.

Silas (#110)
Biblical names are loved and popular and have been for centuries. Silas is one of the more modern sounding biblical names. Add in the fact that it ends in -S and I can see more and more parents using it. From 2017 to 2018 the name moved up 10 spots and if it does the same this year it will be in the top 100.

Kai (#113)
Kai is the last name prediction that is a leftover from last year. The name jumped 13 spots from 2017 to 2018 and that is all it would need to gain his spot in the top 100. Just taking a look back at Kai's movements on the top 1000 chart you can see the name has done nothing but climb up since the 1970s.

Honorable Mentions: Kingston (#117), Bennett (#120), and Ryker (#122)

Clara (#103)
Clara was almost an honorable mention for me because she has been slowly going down in popularity for a few years now. I added her to the list because I think parents are looking for vintage names more than a few years ago. With her sitting just outside the top 100 anything can happen.

Adalynn (#108)
If you take a look at the top 100 or even the top 1000 you will see that Ad- names are popular throughout for girls. Adalynn has many spelling but this is the most popular. If you combine her beginning with her end you get a name that covers multiple trends.

Raelynn (#115)
Raelynn is one of the leftover names from last year's predictions. Although she only gained 9 spots last year the previous years she gained 34 spots. With her southern charm and -lynn ending I can see her earning a spot in the top 100 for 2019.

Athena (#117)
A names have been an ongoing trend for girl names for some time now. I am adding Athena to the list because of her A beginning but also because of her association with Greek mythology. I also can't leave out the fact that she has been gaining popularity since the 2000s.

Arya (#119)
Because of Game of Thrones the name Arya earn a spot on the list. She is an alternative spelling to the much more popular Aria. I think between the beloved show and desire for a less popular spelling the name Arya could make it to the top 100 this year. The name is a leftover from last year and from 2018 to 2019 she gained 16 spots.

Honorable Mentions: Hadley (#104), Jade (#111), and Eliza (#131)

2018 Top 100

Many people say the top 100 are too popular for them. When you think about it, how many of the top 100 names do you know on babies or someone older? I can say that I have not personally met many people with the top 100 names and if I have they are few and far between. So I say give the top 100 a chance!

Each year I take a look at the top 100 to see what names have entered and what names have left. This year I am also going to be looking at some of the biggest risers in the top 100.

To my surprise only 3 boy names entered the top 100 this year. Normally there are at least 5 names. Looking at the other all top 1000 not a whole ton of names entered or moved. Everett is was in my 5 name predictions for new names to the top 100 and Axel with in the honorable mentions. Miles should have been in the top 100 a few years ago so its nice to see it there now. Many parents out there like the -ett ending names and Everett fits the bill.

The girls had more names enter the top 100 than the boys. Sophie fits just right in the top 100 along side her sister names Sophia and Sofia. Last year E girl names were heavy so I am not surprised Emery made the top 100. The name is also similar to other Em- names in the top 100 like Emma, Emily, and Emilia. Last year and this year I predictions that Josephine, Ivy, and Isla would make the top 100 names and this year they did in fact make it. Josephine is a classic name and is Ivy but Ivy has a little bit more of a modern feel to it. Isla is exotic without being exotic.

Because names entered the top 100 some names had to fall off down the list. Here are the names that dropped.

Chase  #94 --> #112
Gavin #96 --> #111
Ayden #99 --> #109

Mackenzie #100 --> #106
Reagan #98 --> #107
Clara #96 --> #103
Isabelle #92 --> #113
Melanie #09 --> #105
Peyton #89 --> #101
Aubree #86 --> #110

The boy names that left the top 100 do not surprise me. It seems we are having the fall of the Aidens. The numbers are showing a slow decline overall. As fort he girls I am surprised some of the names have fallen off the list. Isabelle had just made it onto the top 100 last year and is now off the list. Clara seems like a classic and a fit fort he top 100. As for the others I can see the decline in the names. We are currently in a  shift of style as the parents naming their babies are slowly coming from a younger generation.

This year I also want to take a look at the biggest raisers in the top 100. Some of the names are on the list are names that have been in the top 100 while a few have just entered but made a big leap.

1. Isaac (#34) +34 spots
2. Theodore (#44) +18 spots
3. Carson (#70) +13 spots
4. Asher (#47), Maverick (#73), Santiago (#81), Miles (#98) +12 spots each
5. Leo (#50), Elias (#67)  +11 spots each

1. Nova (#56) +39 spots
2. Everly (#53) +29 spots
3. Emery (#92) +23 spots
4. Ivy (#86) +22 spots
5. Isla (#82) +21 spots

2018 List Predictions {Top 100}

My favorite time of years is just around the corner. Top baby name release! I swear I spend 6+ months counting down the days until the Friday before Mother's Day. Data and charts and list just make my heart so happy but add in the fact that it al pertains to names and main to I die of happiness. For the last few years I have been making predictions. Two sets of predictions; one for names new to the top 100 and one of names new to the top 1000.

With the release just around the corner I am getting these predictions in just in time! Like last year I have 5 boy and 5 girl names I think will enter the top 100 when he list comes out in just a few weeks.

Everett #104
Last year I had Everett on my list and it did not make it into the top 100. It did move up 10 spots and now sits just shy of the 100 spot. From the 1900s to the early 1920s, Everett sat in the top 100. We are back in the time frame for the 100 year rule to work for this name. -Ett names seem to be a popular style for boys lately.

Micah #107
Like Everett, Micah had a small jump from 2016 to 2017 with a 8 spot move. With Noah in the #2 spot and having been #1 for some time it would be no shock to see Micah in the top 100. Both names are biblical, end in -ah, and two syllables. Micah also works as a nice alternative to the classic Michael.

Kai #127
Kai has been climbing the charts at a steady rate since his debut in 1979, especially in recent years. Kyle and Tyler are all names parents of this time are familiar with making Kai sound just as familiar. Almost as a fresh take on such names. There are many things to love about this name, including the laidback style and short to the point, that make it a perfect top 100 name.

Luca #130
Luca is the fresh take on Lucas and Luke just lie Micah is to Michael. A ending boy names seem to be a favorite this past year. When looking for a name that travels well Luca fits the bill. Working in multiple languages. I think with America becoming more and more diverse this name will move up the charts more.

Beau #156
I debuted adding Beau to the list because it would need to jump 56 spots to make the top 100 but it's not unthinkable. From 2016 to 2017 the name jumped 32 spots. Like Kai it is short and right to the point. There are no possibilities of a nickname. The perfect name for a southern babe  might just amen it into the top 100 this year (although this is my long shot name!).

Honorable Mentions: Axel (#105), Rowan (#140), and Emmett (#125)

Josephine #107
Last year 3 out of 5 of my girls names made it onto the top 100 list and the 2 that didn't are on this years predication list. Josephine is one of them. This classic name ranked in the top 50 at one point and could use a comeback. Soft and sweet sounding the name appeals to many ears.

Ivy #108
V heavy names are popular for girls with Ava and Eva in the top 100 already why not add Ivy to the mix? It's a fresh nature name unlike Rose or Lily. From 2016 to 2017 the name jumped just 4 spots but has been climbing up the charts. Only 8 spots stand between Ivy and the top 100.

Isla #103
I would be very shocked to not see Isla in the top 100 spot. This old fashion name is already popular over in England and Wales. And if you are familiar with any of the trends overseas you know that a lot of America's popular names always spend a few years ranking high on the charts across the pond before we catch on.

Raelynn #124
When making this list I was shocked to learn Raelynn jumped 34 spots from 2016 to 2017. I did not expect that at all!The southern charm of the name most grab some attention. Girl names ending in lynn were a trend a few years ago and I think they are still a thing now.

Arya #135
Arya moved 34 spots from 2016 to 2017 and can surely make the move again into the top 100. The spelling made popular by Game of Thrones has a ton of potential. A strong female character as well as being a slightly less popular spelling of a popular name. My only doubt to this names journey to the top 100 is did the new season of GOT come too late?

Honorable mentions: Lyla (#131), Eden (#139) and Iris (#149)

I am really excited for this list! Much more than past years. I might actually have a chance of making some good predictions this year where as in years past I failed horrible. Leave your comments below on what names you think will make it into the top 100!

2017 Top 100

The top 100 names have a special feel to them. They are popular but at the same time there are so many that just simply aren't. I often see parents saying they want a name below the top 100 because in their eyes the top 100 is too popular. But there are so many things to love about the top 100. A lot of the names you probably haven't even met an actual baby with the name. With that being said a name moving into the top 100 is a good thing. It makes the name just a little more familiar to the ears.

Every year only a few names move into the top 100 usually right below 10 for each gender. Here are this year's names.

Jameson and Maverick are names that I had predicted would make their way into the top 100 and they did. I am a little surprised about Kayden moving up. I had thought that the whole Aiden/Kayden trend was dying down but I guess not. What are your thoughts on it?

As for girls I had predicted Valentina, Everly, and Emilia would make their ways into the top 100 and they did! I can see the appeal in Emilia and Everly. E names seem to be a plus for girls lately. Isabelle surprised me a little bit because of how popular Isabella is but she had been just shy of the top 100 last year.

As for the names that have fallen from the top 100 list because of these new names they are:

  1. Bentley #100 --> 102
  2. Brandon #99 -->114
  3. Tyler #91 -->106
  4. Kevin #90 ---> 101
  5. Zachary #89 -->103

  1. Faith #100 --> 119
  2. Brainna #98 --> 123
  3. Taylor #91 --> 112
  4. Katherine #90 --> 105
  5. Kylie #83 --> 114
It seems that most of the names that have fallen from the top 100 are names some would find dated almost. Names that were much more popular 20 years ago. Brandon, Tyler, Kevin, Brianna, and Taylor are all names common to my generation. People of the 1990s. Bentley and Kylie surprise me a little bit in their falls. If anything I would have thought they'd stay right around the same.

Be sure to follow me on Instagram for more new name talk! I will have a few things on there that won't be posted on here. Or at least not for a little bit that is.

1916 Top 100 100 Years Later

Looking at how names age has always interest me. What names from 100 years ago are not popular today? What names have fallen from the charts but could be making a comeback? Can past popularity list hep predicted naming trends? A few months ago I was introduced to the 100 year rule. That is a 100 years after a name was popular it starts to become popular again. All of the names on the following list are not in the top 1000 list for 2016 but were in the top 100 in 2016. Could some of these names pop into the the top 1000 in the next few years?

Florence- #14 in 1916 I am always shocked to find out that Florence isn't in the top 1000. Its such a gorgeous, sweet name with so much to love about it. Not only is it a place name it is also a vintage beauty, famous nurse, and a band.

Viola- #59 in 1916 Its the perfect alternative to the more popular Violet. I picture a princess wearing the name.

Nellie- #61 in 1916 I love the nickname type names and they were all the rage many years ago. Nellie could fit in with Lily and Emmie.

Opal- #91 in 1916 Ruby is a popular 2 syllable gemstone name so why has Opal not caught on? Its a perfect vintage name.

Ida- #54 in 1916 Ava and Ada are popular names and Ida fits perfectly with the pair. This is definitely a name I could see rising into the top 1000 soon.

Chester- #54 in 1916 I added Chester to the list because I feel like after the sudden and sad death of Chester Bennington from Linking Park the name could gain popularity. Bowie is a name that gained more popularity after the death of David Bowie.

Sidney- #95 in 1916 Sidney is a name now popular on girls that was once more popular on boys. I feel like the boys could take over these names and Sidney is one of them.

Willard- #69 in 1916 Willard would make a great alternative to William and would fit the vintage feel that parents may want to go with.

Clarence- #24 in 1916 A 100 years ago Clarence was in the top 30 yet now a days the name is almost none existent. Its soft and sweet and I would love to meet a little Clarence.

Fred- #29 Names like Sam and Ben are in the top 1000 and Frederick is at #519 in 2016. Just Fred would fit right in.

Including the 10 names above here are the rest of the names that were in the 1916 top 100 but are not in the 2016 top 1000

2016 Prediction Results {Top 100}

Last week I took a look at how my name predictions for the new 2016 top 1000 names turned out. If you missed that post go check it out! Fifty percent of my predictions were right, which I thought was really good for a girl who isn't so good at making predictions.

Today I want to look at the my predictions for the new names to the top 100. The top 100 does not get many new names each year, especially when you look at the amount of names that are new to the top 1000 each year. I hate to say it but I am more terrible at making predictions to the top 100 than I actually expected! Out of the 8 names (4 boys, 4 girls) only one of my names actually made it into the top 100. One name did not move at all, one name dropped a few spots, and the rest moved up anywhere from 45 to 3 spots. If you would like to see the recents and a refresher on the names I had on the list keep reading.

Declan, Jameson, Kai, and Maverick were the boy names I predicted would move up into the top 100. None of the boys names moved up. In fact, one name didn't move a single spot! Kai was at #145 in 2015 and in 2016 is was at the exact same spot. Declan, Jameson, and Maverick all moved up int he charts but not enough to make it into the top 100. Declan went from #112 to #109. Jameson went from #144 to #128. Maverick went from #184 to #139 and was the name with the biggest leap on my list.

The only name the moved up into the top 100 from my predictions was Luna, an all time favorite of mine. I am happy to see it up and getting attention. There are many Lu- names out there that people are enjoying so it is no surprise that it jumped up the chart.

One name on my list back in April moved farther down the list. Hadley was #99 in 2014 and dropped down to #103 in 2015. In 2016 the name went down a few more spots to #108. Its not surprising to see it drop even more. In my eyes it seems to be going out of style. Personality I like the name and think it is a nice name. Ivy and Everly were the other two names on my list and both moved up the SSA list but not enough to make it into the top 100. Ivy went from #130 to #112 and Everly went from #138 and #107.

Since only one name on my list moved into the top 100 I thought it would be nice to look at the names that did move up. For girls, Adeline, Luna, Kinsley, Elena, Eliana, and Willow all moved up. As for the gentlemen, Bryson, Leonardo, Greyson, and Roman moved up the chart. Not many names get the privilege to be a part of the top 100.

It does not surprise me that Adeline and Willow have moved up. Ad- names are all the rage in recent times and Willow is being heard more and more. I am honestly surprised Roman had not been in the top 100. It sounds familiar and popular, a nice to the point name.

Next year we will see how much better I am at making predictions. Maybe I will be able to get at least 2 names!

2016 Name Predictions {New to Top 100]

If you caught the first installment in this mini series I am doing than you have an idea of what this post is all about. For those of you who are just coming along now I'll give you a little update. Since the new most popular name list is coming out in the beginning of May, I am taking a look trends and names to see which names I think will move up or down the list. Today I am talking about names that I think will jump into the top 100 for 2016.

Declan- Declan is a name that didn't appear onto the charts until 1998 and since than has been making a steady rise. In 2010, the name was only at #274 and 5 years later it was at #112. I know of many Declans, some of which were born in the last year.

Jameson- In 2015, Jameson was ranked at #144. It has been climbing up the charts, at times at a slow pace, since about the early 2000s. Son names are a trend people like for their boys as well as the surname trend. The classic name James could be an inspiration to parents when they pick he name Jameson.

Kai- Like Jameson, Kai has been climbing up the charts since the early 2000s. It has not been a huge climb and this name could go either up or down. I think the simple sound and nice ocean/beach feel of the name is what appeals to parents. Since the name has been more popular in recent years than say 15 years ago more people know how to pronounce it.

Maverick- Maverick has been making a steady climb up the charts and more and more people are talking bout it. Teen Mom star, Maci Bookout had a son named Maverick in 2016 and it could influence the population, although we may not see it until the 2017 list comes out in a year.

Luna- Luna is so close to being in the top 100. She is just 10 away! I would bet my life that when the list comes out in a month Luna will be up there in the top 100. She has been climbing at a nice, fast, rate up the charts since the early 2000s. In 2003 the name made its way back onto the charts from eh first time since 1921.

Hadley- Now, Hadley has been in the top 100. In 2014, she was at #99 and than in 2015 she dropped down to 102. I am putting this name on the list even though it dropped for a few reasons. First, she is just 2 spots outside of the top 100 and only drop 3 spots. Second, there is still an appeal for the name. Its a surname, short and sweet, and has no middle names. It can also be associated with literature because it is the ahem of Ernest Hemingway's wife.

Ivy- With vintage feeling names coming back to style, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ivy in the top 100. Not only that but she has been rising in popularity for the last few years. She has been on the charts since the 1900s but has never topped the top 100. Maybe 2016 will be her year?

Everly- In 2012, Everly popped onto the top 1000 chart for the first time at #905. She leaped up the charts and in 2015 was already at #138. Thats just 4 years! With that being said I foresee the name being in the top 100 in 2016.

Always in the Top 100

I was taking a look at the top 100 names from 2015 and 1915 and was seeing which names were in both (check out the post here!). After I made the post I was thinking about which of those names have always been in the top 100. So I did some research and came up with a very short list.

I was extremely surprised to see that there was only one girl name. I expected at least one more name to be on this list. Are you surprised by the names? Were there any names you were expecting to see? I had so much fun looking at these list.
