2021 Comeback Kids

Comeback Kid: A name that was once ranked in the top 1000 but fell off the list for 1 or more years.

I love looking at the names that are back onto the top 1000 and how long they have been off the list. Often times the names have only been off the list for a year or two but every once in a while you will see a name that hasn't been ranked since the 1930s, 1940s, or 1950s.

In 2021 39 names are back on the list. Half of them have only been off the list for a year but one name has not ranked for 82 years! I love when vintage beauties rank again.

*Next to each name is their ranking for 2021. Below each name is the last year they ranked and the number spot they were at.*

2021 Top 100

The top 100 list is a hodge podge of names. You have the classic, timeless names mixed in with the modern coming of age names. I like to think there is a name on the top 100 for everyone. I know there are some people that would say any name in the top 100 is off limits. But I like to counteract that with asking this one question: "How many babies or kids do you know with the name Silas or Ruby?" Both those names are currently ranked under the top 50 but still in the top 100. Personally I don't know any kids in real life with those names. I can guarantee that there are plenty of names in the top 100 that you haven't heard on a baby or younger child in real life. And every year the names move just a little. A name that is in the top 100 this year might fall out next year and vice versa.

This year we had 6 new names jump into the top 100, 4 boys and 2 girls. I have to say I'm surprised that there aren't move changes to the girl names. Relatively speaking there are more girl names and variants out there than there are boy names. But it looks like we are getting a little bit of a change with the boys this year.

I am not surprised at the boy names that have entered the top 100. In fact I had predicted that Beau, Bennett, and Waylon would enter the top 100. I am getting a very western vibe from these new boy names.

As for the girl names I am very surprised that Athena and Rylee are in the top 100. They have been hovering just outside the list in recent years. Rylee was actually #100 a few years back. I thought for sure she would inch down just a little this year. I do have to say I had no idea what names would even be entering the top 100 this year for girls. Most of the names just didn't feel like they would make it in.

Because we gained 6 new names to the list that means 6 names fell down the charts.

Jaxson #85 --> #101
Jace #96 --> #102
Adam #97 --> #104
Kayden #99 --> #108

Samantha #90 --> 105
Brielle #100 --> #118

I am going to keep up with my fun name data analysis from years past and include the top 5 names that had the biggest increases and biggest decreases within the top 100 for both genders. I won't be including names that entered the top 100 this year.

1. Luca (#42), Brooks (#77) +25
2. Kai (#71) +22
3. Wesley (#84) +14
4. Theodore (#10) +13
5. Jack (#11) +10

1. Leilani (#67) +25
2.  Autumn (#66) +16
3.  Ruby (#62), Alice (#64) +12
4. Isla (#33), Delilah (#58) +11
5. Caroline (#81) +10

Biggest Decreases Within the Top 100
1. Connor (#97) -19
2. Hunter (#86) -18
3. Carson (#98) -14
4. Dominic (#99) -11
5. Jeremiah (#85) -10

1. Anna (#84) -16
2. Josephine (#72), Serenity (#85) -15
3. Genesis (#75) -13
4. Skylar (#74) -11
5. Victoria (#43), Aubrey (#65), Bella, (#73), Ariana (#88) -9

How do you feel about the top 100? What are your favorites?

2021 Top 10

"It's the most wonderful time of the year!"

Close your eyes and imagine me singing that Christmas song in the beginning of May. That's exactly what's happening this weekend! The Social Security Office released the most popular names for 2021 (the most recent year of data). If you are a namer than you probably have similar feelings as myself. Some people in the name community call this Namer's Christmas and I couldn't agree with them more.

I've been looking over the data since yesterday and collecting all sorts of fun info. I have lots of posts idea to share but we're going to start with the simple top 10.

Boys
1. Liam
2. Noah
3. Oliver
4. Elijah
5. James +1
6. William -1
7. Benjamin
8. Lucas
9. Henry
10. Theodore +13

Girls
1. Olivia
2. Emma
3. Charlotte +1
4. Amelia +2
5. Ava -1
6. Sophia-1
7. Isabella
8. Mia
9. Evelyn
10. Harper

We have a new comer to the boy's list! Mr. Theodore jumped 13 spots and landed a place in the top 10 knocking Alexander down to #13. I have to say I am very excited for that jump. To me, Theodore is a timeless name that doesn't feel dated. Other than Theodore's jump the boy names stayed relatively the same. In fact, the only other movement was the switch between James and William.

2021 bought no new names to the girl's top 10. In fact the only movement on the list was in the middle spots. I will say I am excited that Charlotte is inching closer to #1 (even if it was only one spot). I have a feeling we will see her move higher up in the near future.

Now I have never done this in the past but while I was looking at the top 100 list I noticed something. Jack jumped 10 spots to #11, just shy of the top 10. So then I got to thinking and went to take a look at the number of babies given the names Theodore and Jack (#10 and #11 respectively). Theodore was given to 9,535 boys and Jack was given to 9,504. That means Jack missed the top 10 by just 31 babies. It seems that the difference between #10 and #11 is a couple of hundred babies but I did see a gap as small as just 10 babies. Will Jack make it into the top 10 next year?

Liam
  • For the 5th year in a row Liam is the reigning champ!
  • He's been in the top 10 since 2012 and when he jumped into the top 10 he went from #15 to #6.

Olivia
  • Olivia has been #1 now for 3 years running.
  • She has been in the top 10 since 2001
  • She has been in the top 1000 every year since 1880

2019 Newbies

These next 2 blog posts are my favorites of all the new SSA name release blog post series. I love taking a look at the names that are entering the top 1000. I split my list up into 2 groups; names that have never been on the list before and names that are coming back from years past. Below you will find all the names that are entering the list for the first time. 2019 SSA Top 100

The top 100 list is always a line for people it is either too popular and just right. Personally I can't decide. Years ago I would have said that the list was too popular and never pick a name in the top 100 but now I say otherwise. Some of my favorite names are in the top 100. Of those names I have never or rarely hear kids with the names. That is something to take into consideration: How many babies do you know with the names in the top 100?

To my surprise there were only 4 new to the top 100 names for each gender. Last year there were almost double that for girls. I feel like there wasn't as much moving and grooving overall to the list this year.

All of the boy names that entered the top 100 do not surprise me. I have been waiting for Kai to enter the top 100 for a few years now. Its one of the names I always see around the naming community. Luca is a name that I can see the appeal of. It ends in an A and is very similar to the much more popular name Lucas.

I am split on the new girl names to the top 100. I wouldn't have expected Peyton to enter the top 100. This name has been in the top 100 before and even ranked in the top 50 in the early 2010s. For that reason I would expect it to go down. Rylee has been hovering just outside the top 100 for a few years now. Parents see the appeal of the name for the unique yet girly spelling. It honestly surprises me that Arya is just now entering the top 100 even after all the years of the super popular Game of Thrones series.

Because 8 new names entered the top 100 8 names had to leave the top 100. Here are the names that dropped off. The 2018 rank is first and the new 2019 rank is second.

Jason #100 --> #104
Sawyer #99 --> #106
Bryson #93 --> #102
Brayden #84 --> #101

Brielle #99 --> #101
Kaylee #97 --> #114
Arianna #95 --> #116
Alexa #90 --> #139

I am not surprised at the names that dropped off the list especially for Alexa. I think the name is going to keep dropping off the list due to the popular virtual assistant. I think the Brayden names are becoming less and less popular and the numbers show that for sure. When it comes to Sawyer I think the name will jump in and out of the top 100.

Last year I did something new and I want to do it again this year. I am going to take a look at the names that had the biggest moves within the top 100. These are names that were already there but had a big jump.

1. Miles (#75) +23
2. Ezekiel (#71) +16
3. Maverick (#58) +15
4. Jameson (#77) +14
5. Santiago (#69) +43

1. Isla (#57) +25
2. Eliana (#62) +21
3. Ivy (#68) +18
4. Valentina (#65), Emilia (#42) +16
5. Willow (#46) +14

2019 SSA Name List (Finally!)

After nearly 4 months of waiting the brand new 2019 SSA most popular list is out!!!! I am screaming and not going to lie I jumped off the couch so fast I made my mom concerned. Thanks to babynames.com for alerting me to the new list being out. If I'm being honest I did not believe it was really out at all and had to check and double check. A few weeks I ago I checked out of curiosity and had lost hope the list would be making an appearance any time soon.

So without waiting any longer let's dive in to the much awaited name list starting with he top 19 most popular names.

Boys
1. Liam
2. Noah
3. Oliver +2
4. William -1
5. Elijah +2
6. James -2
7. Benjamin -1
8. Lucas
9. Mason
10. Ethan +2

Girls
1. Olivia +1
2. Emma -1
3. Ava
4. Sophia +1
5. Isabella -1
6. Charlotte
7. Amelia +1
8. Mia -1
9. Harper
10. Evelyn

Compared to last years list the boy names had move moving and grooving while the girl names only moved a spot if that. Yet when you take a look back at the movements of the top 10 in 2018 you will find that the top 5 girl names did not change at all last year. So in hindsight the girl names did have some big moves. The biggest move is the overtaking of Emma by Olivia for the number 1 spot.

The only new comer to the top 10 was Ethan. He knocked out Logan. Surprisingly (or maybe not) Ethan last ranked in the top 10 in 2016 at #10 but prior to that Ethan ranked in the top 10 from 2002 to 2016 with his highest ranking being in 2009 and 2010 at #2.

Let's look at some fun facts for the #1 names for 2019.

Liam
  • Has ranked #1 for 3 years now.
  • The name first entered the top 10 in 2012
  • The name didn't enter the top 1000 until 1967
Olivia
  • Has been in the #2 spot for the last 5 years
  • First entered the top 10 back in 2001 at #10
  • Olivia has ranked in the top 1000 every year since 1880

So what are your thoughts? Are you shocked the name list is out right now?

2019 Predictions {Top 10}

We are quickly coming up on the best time of the year for namers. The new SSA name list comes out on Friday. For those that do not know what the SSA name is it is the social secretary list of names popular for each year. Some namers call this the namer's Christmas and I could not agree more. I am so committed to this list release that I requested off from work 7 months ago and will be up with the sun waiting for it. If that doesn't say name obsession I don't know what does!

I will be spending the week working on making predictions for the new list coming out. This will be my fourth year doing this and although I am not the best I find it super fun. Predicting the top 10 name list is something I didn't start until last year. It seems so hard to pick the names and be on point because they don't change as often as the rest of the list.

Top 2018 List
Boys
1. Liam
2. Noah
3. William
4. James
5. Oliver
6. Benjamin
7. Elijah
8. Lucas
9. Mason
10. Logan

Girls
1. Emma
2. Olivia
3. Ava
4. Isabella
5. Sophia
6. Charlotte
7. Mia
8. Amelia
9. Harper
10. Evelyn

My Predictions for the 2019 top 10

Boys
1. Liam
2. Noah
3. William
4. Oliver
5. James
6. Benjamin
7. Elijah
8. Lucas
9. Michael
10. Mason

Girls
1. Emma
2. Olivia
3. Ava
4. Sophia
5. Charlotte
6. Isabella
7. Amelia
8. Harper
9. Mia
10. Elizabeth

The top 4 boy names were unchanged from 2017 to 2018 and I think the top 3 will stay the same but Oliver will gain more popularity this year. I see Logan falling off the top 10 list this year and Michael possibly jumping back on. Michael is my wildcard guess.

On the girls list the top 3 names did not change so I am keeping it the same for this year. I think Harper will rise up the chart and Evelyn will fall off. Elizabeth is my wildcard this year.

Stay tune for the list to be release Friday May 8, 2020!

10 Names Given to 10 Babies

Happy 10/10/19! I was at a lost as to what to post today and when I saw the date I knew I had to do a play on 10/10. Below I have 10 names (5 girls and 5 boys) given to just 10 babies in 2018. These are all names with background and meaning and history.

Girls
Hildegard- Battle Enclosure; German
Saint Hildegard was famous for her writings and poetry. This exotic name is a nice spin on Hillary and Heidi even. In Disney's Sophia the First there is a minor character bearing the same name. I adore the nicknames Hildie, Hilda, Garry, and Dede.

Cressida- Golden; Greek
This name comes from Medieval times as a Trojan woman who leaves her lover for a Greek hero. Shakespeare wrote a play about the lovers called 'Troilus and Cressida'. In modern times the name was used in The Hunger Games and is the author of How to Train Your Dragon.

Aleta- Truth; English
The name first appeared in 1937 in the comic 'Prince Valiant' as the wife of the lead character. She was a queen. A real life Aleta is Aleta St. James, an American healer and new mother at 57. There is so much to love about this name; the sound, the spelling, the pictures it brings to mind.

Ioanna- Form of Joanna (Yahweh is Gracious); Greek
Pronounced ee-oh-ah-nah the may be a little tongue twister with all of the vowels. I think once you hear it a few times the name is beautiful and different. Its a nice way to honor a John or Joan.

Olivette- Feminine Form of Oliver (Olive Tree);French
The name comes from the French opera Les notes d'olivetti" by Emond Audran. The name is a wonderful, beautiful alternative to Olivia. She falls right in line with other -ette names as well. There is a city in Missouri with the same name.

Boys
Basilio- King; Italian and Spanish
Basilio is the Italian and Spanish form of Basil. The name is used as both a given name and a surname along with the name of a few places particularly in Italy. A Famous Basilio is Carmen Basilio, a hall of fame boxer.

Caldwell- Cold Spring, Stream; English
This English surname turn first name is a part of the two great grounds, the Cals and the Wells. I could see Caldwell on the playground with Calvins and Maxwells. There is a university in New Jersey with the name as well as town.

Prometheus- Foresight, Forethought; Greek
In Greek myth Prometheus was the Titian who gave knowledge of fire to mankind. Zeus punished him for doing this by chaining him to a rock but he was eventually freed. This is a cool unexpected fire name. Some nickname options include Theo, Prom, Prommie, Matt, and Rome.

Neville- New Town; English
The name is very British sounding and more often used across the pond. For me the name jars up a picture of Neville Papperman from the Nick tv show called iCarly. Others may think of Charles Dickens unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Rutherford- Cattle Ford; Scottish
The first name of the 19th president of the United States as well as a surname. Another famous Rutherford is Ernest Rutherford, a physicist who helped with radioactive substance understanding. Rudy, Ford, and Ruthie are all good nicknames.

2018 SSA List!

It's the best day in the naming world. The new SSA most popular name list is out! Sadly I worked a 12 hours shift so I am just now getting the chance to sit down and really look over the name list at near 1030 at night. Granted I did some sister-cousin bounding time right after work but still! I will still be posting my normal yearly posts they will just be a little late this year. But keep your eyes peeled for them this weekend!

Let's spend this time looking at the top 10 names for 2018!

1. Liam
2. Noah
3. William
4. James
5. Oliver +4
6. Benjamin
7. Elijah +1
8. Lucas +3
9. Mason -2
10. Logan -5

1. Emma
2. Olivia
3. Ava
4. Isabella
5. Sophia
6. Charlotte +1
7. Mia -1
8. Amelia
9. Harper +2
10. Evelyn -1

Compared to last years list there were very few changes to the top 10. Only one name was added for each gender. Lucas replaced Jacob in the top 10 and Harper replaced Abigail. Jacob had been in the top 10 since 1993 and was even #1 for 13 years in the 2000s. Lucas is sitting in the top 10 group for the first time but has been making his steady climb up since 1960s. In 1993 the name popped back into the top 100.

Abigail entered the top 10 in 2001 and only ever made it as high as #4 for a single year before it floated around close to the bottom of the top 10 list. Harper on the other hand has been making a huge leap towards the top. The name didn't enter the top 1000 until 2004 and made it into the top 100 by 2011. Harper is a repeat offender in the top 10 landing in the #10 spot in 2015 and staying there for 2016 before dropping out again.

Overall I'm happy with the last but a little shocked we didn't have more movement. I mean the top 5 girl names have not changed! Speaking of the unchanged #1 names here are some fun facts about them.

Liam
  • Has only been #1 for 2 years
  • The name entered the top 10 in 2012
  • The name didn't enter the top 1000 until 1967and has made a semi steady climb up the charts

Emma:
  • Has been #1 for 5 straight years now and was also #1 in 2008
  • It first entered the top 10 in 2002 jumping from #13 to #4. Thats 9 whole spots!
  • The name as been around since the start of the top 1000 lists and was in the top 20 for 20 years in the 1900s

So what are your thoughts? Anything you'd like to see?

2018 SSA List Predictions {Top 1000}

Last week I wrote a post on my predications for names entering the top 100 in 2018 when the new list comes out on Friday. Today I am going to make some predications to new names to the top 1000. Every year many names enter the top 1000 either for the first time or as a comeback. A lot of the names on this list are names I wold love to see make it onto the top 1000.

Forest- Given to 200 baby boys in 2017
Forest sits just outside the top 1000 at #1006. Word names and nature names are all the rage. I think Forest is the perfect name to come back into the top 1000. This name would be a comeback kid being as it was just in the top 1000 in 1995 and in the 1910s and 1920s was in the top 300. Forest is a vintage name of sorts.

Bear- Given to 196 baby boys in 2017
Last year I had Bear on my predication list and it did not make it into the top 1000. Bear has never been in the top 1000 and would be a welcomed addition. Like Forest, Bear is a word name. I hear a lot of word names around, especially in 2018. In March of 2017 Liam Payne named his son Bear. It was later in the year so I could see the name influencing the numbers in 2018.

Archie- Given to 156 baby boys in 2017
Archie was another name on my predictions list last year and I am adding it to this year's list. There are 2 reasons why I think Archie will jump into he top 1000. 1. Riverdale has been a popular show in the past few years and the main character's name is Archie. 2. Archie is more popular in England and has been for a few years. America always takes naming cues from England.

Adler- Given to 194 baby boys in 2017
Adler has this appeal to it that I just cannot but my finger on it. The name sounds fresh to the ears. It's a surname name, a perfect name for today's trends. From 2016 to 2017 a few more baby boys were given the name, from 170 babies to 194 babies.

Gus- Given to 178 baby boys in 2017
Old man chic names are due to come back, especially the names that were popular in the 1920s. In the 1920s Gus ranked in the top 300 and would make a nice addition to the top 1000. A new trend I have seen happening recently is nicknameless names, names that do not have nicknames. Gus is perfect for that trend.

Honorable Mentions: Stone, Ramsey, Murphy, and Finnian

Elodie- Given to 251 baby girls in 2017
Last year I had Elodie on my prediction list and the name didn't make it. I am adding it to my list again this year because I am SURE it will make it into the top 1000. So many people love the name. It fits in with the other El- names like Eleanor and Elizabeth. Its magical and princess like.

Winnie- Given to 257 baby girls in 2017
Winnie sits just outside the top 1000 at #1002. The name has a lot of vintage charm and is a pretty nickname. The current generation is digging nicknames more than naming a child with a name that offers the option of a nickname. Maybe parents who already have daughters named Millie and Sadie and Belle will name their 2018 baby Winnie?

Bellamy- Given to 247 baby girls in 2017
Bellamy is the perfect alternative to the Belle names out there that some parents might want to use but is too popular for their taste. It is an up and coming name. A surname that sounds more popular than it really is. If the name doesn't hit the top 1000 this year it for sure will hit it next year.

Flora- Given to 222 baby girls in 2017
Flora was once in the top 1000 ranking just outside the top 100 in the 1910s and staying in the top 1000 until the 1970s when the name fell off the charts. This vintage beauty is really for a comeback. Ora names are attractive to parents now with their elegant feel.

Haisley- Given to 227 baby girls in 2017
I debuting adding Haisley to my predictions list. I ultimately added it because it seems like the trend name that parents could like. A little bit of Hayley and a little bit of Maisie and an alternative to Paisley make this name appealing. Will it jump into the top 1000?

Honorable Mentions: Waverly, Lilia, Beatrix, and Arden

I am very excited for the list to come out on Friday. Sadly I will be working a 12 hours shift but you better believe I will be rushing home to spend hours looking at the list. Every year I am most excited for the new names to the top 1000. What are your predications?

2017 Comeback Kids

Some namers take a look at the SSA list every year and group together all of the name that weren't on the top 1000 the year before into one category. I on the other hand like to split them up into two categories; newbies and comeback kids. This posts today is all about the comeback kids. What are comeback kids exactly? They are ones that have previously been on the top 1000 list but were not on the 2016 list. Some names haven't been on the list for 1 year while others haven't been on for 62 years! The following lists are in order from last time spent off the list to most time off the list.

Last Ranked in 1981 (#956)

Opal #859
Last Ranked in 1960 (#918)

Luella #905
Last Ranked in 1955 (#971)

Which names for each gender spent the most time off the top 1000? For boys it was Bjorn for spending 37 years off the list and Luella for the ladies. She spent 62 years off the list.

One interesting thing I noticed was some of the names on the list have only ranked for two years in total, this year being one of them. For boys that would be Khari and for girls it is Treasure, Jurnee, Aminah, and Meilani.

I feel like this year the list is on the smaller size. I was expecting a lot more names. Are we not using extremely unique names as much? One can always wonder. As for the names that are on the list I am excited to see Bishop, Simeon, Magdalena, India, Selene, Octavia, Florence, and Opal on the list. A few of those I had actually predicted would make their ways back!

2017 Newbies

Every year when the new Social Security Administration (SSA) name list comes out I take a look at some categories of names immediately. One of which is names that have never been on the top 1000 before but have made it this year. And every year I think there can't be many new names to the list. But then I am reminded that there are thousands upon thousands of names in this world just waiting to be discovered. Just to be clear these names have never been on the most popular list since the charts first came out in 1880!

2017 Top 100

The top 100 names have a special feel to them. They are popular but at the same time there are so many that just simply aren't. I often see parents saying they want a name below the top 100 because in their eyes the top 100 is too popular. But there are so many things to love about the top 100. A lot of the names you probably haven't even met an actual baby with the name. With that being said a name moving into the top 100 is a good thing. It makes the name just a little more familiar to the ears.

Every year only a few names move into the top 100 usually right below 10 for each gender. Here are this year's names.

Jameson and Maverick are names that I had predicted would make their way into the top 100 and they did. I am a little surprised about Kayden moving up. I had thought that the whole Aiden/Kayden trend was dying down but I guess not. What are your thoughts on it?

As for girls I had predicted Valentina, Everly, and Emilia would make their ways into the top 100 and they did! I can see the appeal in Emilia and Everly. E names seem to be a plus for girls lately. Isabelle surprised me a little bit because of how popular Isabella is but she had been just shy of the top 100 last year.

As for the names that have fallen from the top 100 list because of these new names they are:

  1. Bentley #100 --> 102
  2. Brandon #99 -->114
  3. Tyler #91 -->106
  4. Kevin #90 ---> 101
  5. Zachary #89 -->103

  1. Faith #100 --> 119
  2. Brainna #98 --> 123
  3. Taylor #91 --> 112
  4. Katherine #90 --> 105
  5. Kylie #83 --> 114
It seems that most of the names that have fallen from the top 100 are names some would find dated almost. Names that were much more popular 20 years ago. Brandon, Tyler, Kevin, Brianna, and Taylor are all names common to my generation. People of the 1990s. Bentley and Kylie surprise me a little bit in their falls. If anything I would have thought they'd stay right around the same.

Be sure to follow me on Instagram for more new name talk! I will have a few things on there that won't be posted on here. Or at least not for a little bit that is.
